Child reacting to a rabid dog bite

Teach children what to do if bitten or scratched by a dog 🧼

Do you know?

What should you do immediately if a child is bitten by an animal that might have rabies?

Select one

Teach children that if them or another person is bitten, scratched, or licked by a dog that might have rabies, it is very important to:

  • Wash the wound with lots of soap and lots of running water for at least 15 minutes.
  • The child should immediately report the incident to you, their parents, or caregivers, so they can take them to see a health worker.
  • The child should be taken to the nearest healthcare facility. Health workers should be informed about the incident so they can assess and start post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) if needed.
  • If possible, the parent or caregiver should find out who the owner of the dog is and if it has been vaccinated against rabies, or if the dog has been sick or behaved strangely during the last week.

Commitment question:

Now that you know what to do, do you feel prepared and confident to act if you or a student is bitten, scratched, or licked on broken skin, the lips, or in the eyes by dogs suspected of having rabies?
