Act fast if a child is bitten, scratched, or licked by a rabid dog ⚡
If your or someone else’s child is bitten, scratched, or licked by a dog that might have rabies, it's very important to:
- Wash the wound with lots of soap and lots of running water for at least 15 minutes.
- Take the child to the nearest healthcare facility immediately. Inform the healthcare provider about the exposure so they can start vaccine treatment if needed.
- If possible, find out who the owner of the dog is and if it has been vaccinated against rabies, or if the dog has been sick or behaved strangely during the last week.
Remember, once symptoms appear and a person is sick with rabies, the disease is fatal. This is why itis important to act quickly if someone is bitten or scratched by a dog with rabies.
As long as the symptoms of rabies have not yet developed, it is not too late to get the treatment that prevents rabies disease. Getting treated quickly can save their life.
