Recognizing Rabies in Dogs

Learn to identify a dog with rabies and report it 💡

The first step to take is to learn to identify a dog with rabies.

Can you do it?

How do you know if a dog may have rabies?

The only way to know for sure if an animal has rabies is if a veterinarian checks the dog's brain after it has died. But there are signs that tell you if a dog may have rabies. A dog with rabies will often:

  • Behave strangely and aggressively (barking and biting) for no reason.
  • Look weak and sleepy, not interested in anything around it.
  • Unable to stand and walk normally.
  • Foam around the mouth.
  • Bark in a strange manner, differently from normal.

It's not always easy to tell if an animal has rabies just by looking at it.

Sometimes, we only know for sure after it dies, and the veterinary doctor confirms that it had rabies. For example, a dog with rabies usually gets very sick and dies within 7-10 days. If a dog looks very sick but doesn't die within 10 days, it probably doesn't have rabies.

If you see a dog acting strangely, it may have rabies. You must:

  • Stay away from the dog. Don't touch it 🛑
  • Tell your parents, teacher, health worker, or any other adult about the dog 🗣️

By doing this, you are keeping yourself and everyone in your community safe 🌟

Commitment question:

If I see a dog that looks like it may have rabies, I promise to stay away from it and tell my parents, teacher, or a health worker right away.
