Rabies is caused by a virus found in the saliva of infected animals. Almost all cases of rabies in humans come from dogs. When an infected dog bites or licks a person, the virus in the dog’s saliva infects the human.

Almost all people who die from rabies are infected by a dog. However, other animals such as cats, donkeys, horses, and camels can also contract rabies and transmit it to humans through bites, scratches, or by licking broken skin, lips, or eyes.

If you are bitten, scratched, or licked by a dog or another animal, you must act fast even if you are not sure if it has rabies or not.
