The Process

Note: You’ll need a core team of about 3 to 5 people to drive the process.

Don’t worry—the DSB process is not a full-time commitment. It can be flexibly paced and depends on your availability. The full time needed for the DSB is around 10 to 12 days, including workshop facilitation and planning time. The entire process could take up to 3 to 6 months depending on the availability of stakeholders and time for planning.

The process you’ll follow

There are five key phases in the DSB process. In each phase, you’ll be inviting people to join you, so you’ll mostly be working in small and large teams. The journey can go as fast or as slow as you’d like it to. Here’s what you’ll be covering:

Phase 1: Initial Insights

A critical first step where the core team of people leading the DSB process analyse existing data, get buy-in from decision-makers, and create a plan, budget, timeline, and logistics for the whole DSB process. Don’t skip this step or you won’t have a DSB process!

  • Module A - Build a Team: decide who will lead the DSB process and which decision-makers you’ll need for approval and support.
  • Module B - Gather Data: collect information about the current immunization status and any existing demand strategies in your area.
  • Module C - Plan & Invite: identify the participants needed to develop the strategy and send out invitations.
  • Module D - Manage Finances: plan how to fund the DSB process and explore funding options for strategy implementation. **
  • Module E - Organise Logistics: plan the workshops and field data collection activities.

Phase 2: Workshop One

A two-day in-person workshop with key system-side and community representatives. During the workshop, you’ll 1) confirm which locations and communities the strategy will focus on, 2) explore key barriers to vaccination, and 3) plan for Field Insights.

Module A - Validate: confirm the priority locations, communities, and immunization objectives for your strategy.

Module B - Who: learn about your priority communities using a “persona” activity.

Module C - Why :identify and prioritise reasons why people aren’t getting vaccinated from the view of caregivers and the healthcare system.

Module D - Her First: identify reasons why access to vaccination may differ for men and women.

Module E - Field Plan: plan field visits to confirm your ideas and collect data.

Phase 3: Field Insights

A one-to-two day field trip where all workshop participants collect high-level qualitative data to help build empathy and learn about immunization barriers for the communities that the strategy is focused on.

  • Coordinate logistics and provide support to workshop teams as they go into the high-risk communities to speak to them and understand their views on immunization

Phase 4: Workshop Two

A three-day in-person workshop to analyse the fieldwork, develop solutions to increase immunization demand, and develop an implementation plan.

Module A - Adjust Who: review data from the field to learn more about the priority communities and update the personas from Workshop 1.

Module B - Adjust Why :use Field Insights to think about why people aren’t accessing vaccination and update priority immunization barriers from Workshop 1.

Module C - Solve: ideate, refine, and prioritise solutions to address the priority barriers.

Module D - Implement: create a high-level plan for implementing the solutions, including indicators, timelines, estimated budget, and key roles for implementing solutions

Phase 5: Finalisation

Document the final demand strategy and get ready for implementation!

Module A - Finalisation: review and polish your Strategy.

Module B - Validate and Endorse: validate the strategy with key decision-makers and secure endorsements for implementation.

YOUR TOOLS TO PRINT:

CORE TOOLS (online)

  1. The Demand Strategy Builder Template: This is your Immunization Demand Strategy! It is the final result of the DSB process—a summary of the strategy priority areas, solution, and implementation plan. This is where you will document your Immunization Demand Strategy during each step. The result of each module aligns with a section in the DSB Strategy template.
  2. This Facilitation Guide: This guide will help you prepare for each step and module in the DSB. You’ll also use it before, during, and after facilitation to remind you of the activity steps and what comes next.
  3. Header Posters: These posters outline the different modules in the workshop. There is one header poster for each of the modules in the two workshops. Workshop 1 has five posters—one for each module—so at the end you will have five posters.
  4. Strategy Summary Posters: These are critical to both workshops. They are posters that summarise the key decisions made about the Immunization Demand Strategy in each workshop. At the end of Workshop 2, if you place all these posters next to each other on the wall, you’ll be able to see the full strategy!
  5. Table Worksheets: These are worksheets that participants will use for group activities to capture their ideas during workshops.
  6. Prompt Cards: Prompt cards contain examples, hints, and case studies to help participants think about activities e.g. examples of barriers to immunization. They are critical to help encourage participants to think about the problem.
  7. Optional Online Templates: To help with planning, we have provided some templates to help you along the way e.g. budget template and timeline.
