What lead does to the body and the brain
Before we start each section, we’ll ask you a question to help you see how much you you've learned.
Even a little exposure means a lot.
Lead is a potent neurotoxin. Even low‑level exposure is associated with reduced IQ, shortened attention spans, poor academic performance and behavioural challenges.
Lead exposure can affect children’s ability to remember instructions, follow rules, control emotions and behaviour, and interact with others. It can also make children more aggressive.
Children under the age of five are at the greatest risk of suffering lifelong neurological, cognitive and physical damage, and even death, from lead poisoning.
Older children and adults may also suffer severe consequences later in life, including kidney damage and cardiovascular disease.
